Dragon LNG won the Careers Wales Education Award for The Darwin Centre Experience, which aims to increase pupils’ knowledge in Science, Technology Engineering and Maths, collectively known as STEM subjects. During the last 11 years, more than 33,000 young people have taken part in the Darwin Centre Experience arranged activities ranging from pond dipping and rock pooling, to visits to a local theme park to study engineering and a local mill to look at renewable energy from hundreds of years ago.

Commenting, Becky Lumlock, Managing Director, Dragon LNG said: “We are delighted to have won a Business in the Community Award for the Darwin Project. All of our sponsorship is focused on youth development within Pembrokeshire and the Darwin project is a fantastic example of this.”

The Dragon LNG sponsored project receives huge support from its various associations, especially its core partners The Darwin Centre Educational Charity, Pembrokeshire College, Pembrokeshire County Council Education Department and Pembrokeshire Schools. The project and the support it receives enables thousands of young people to access industrial expertise, improve learning experiences, reach their potential, and raise aspiration. It is particularly important for local young people to pick up the right skills to get them ready for employment in the growing energy sector.

Marten Lewis, Darwin Centre Executive Director, added “The programme enables us to ensure that junior school children receive an exciting introduction to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) that otherwise they might not get. All of the schools we have visited have said it increases pupils’ interest and achievement in STEM as well as increases their outdoor learning.

The Wales Responsible Business Awards, held at Cardiff City Stadium on 30th June, are coordinated and managed in Wales by Business in the Community (BITC) Cymru, The Prince of Wales responsible Business Network. The awards are the longest running and most robust responsible business awards programme in the UK and they identify and celebrate inspirational and leading companies which are taking positive action to address the social, economic and environmental challenges we face as a nation.
