Young Sailors ready to set sail

Neyland Yacht Club youth section recently received a welcome boost from Dragon LNG.

The club had a number of dinghies which were out of service and not available for use by the junior section.  The donation from Dragon LNG has enabled the club to buy the parts required to repair the dinghies and enable more children to go sailing. 

Sam Scadden, Commodore for Neyland Yacht Club, said ‘One of the main aims of Neyland Yacht Club is to get children and their families out onto the water. By having the right equipment here at the club we are able to offer youngsters the opportunity to try it out and see if they like it. We currently have a very good squad who have done very well in recent competitions. To learn to sail in the River Cleddau is very challenging due to the changing currents and tides.’

The Yacht Club, established in November 1965 became an ROA recognised school in 1996. It now teaches 4 different levels and currently has approximately 30 children and young people sailing and competing on a regular basis with them.

Lynette Round, PR and Facilities Coordinator for Dragon LNG, said ‘It was great to see the enthusiasm the young people had when setting up the sailing dinghies ready to go on the water. By concentrating our sponsorship on youth development we have helped many clubs like this establish a strong base from grass roots up.’
