Flora and Fauna

Surveys have been undertaken by specialists to identify flora and fauna within the additional areas above the currently approved scheme that are likely to be impacted by the extended Terminal development. Particular attention has been given to badgers, bats, birds and other species that are protected or unique to the area.

For the approved development, badger setts have been found for which a mitigation and management plan is being undertaken. Further survey and monitoring will be undertaken as construction progresses and where necessary sett closure licences obtained and appropriate mitigation and new habitat provided.

No bat breeding colonies were located on the site, but trees suitable for bats were resurveyed prior to their removal and the tree removal witnessed by a bat expert.

With respect to birds, there would be some small gain of habitat for breeding species as a result retention of trees on the cliff face arising from re-alignment of the LNG pipelines.

The improved final landscaping and water features in the development proposals will provide environmental gain in terms of biodiversity and nature conservation.

Good site management and strict safety regulations during operation will ensure that long-term disturbance of the marine ecology near to the site is avoided. Impacts on marine mammals can be minimised by adopting regular and predictable movements and periods of disturbance.
