Dragon LNG undertook an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), consulting with over 50 organisations, including local interest groups and statutory and non-statutory bodies. This led to the production of an Environmental Statement. The EIA concluded that the construction of the liquefied natural gas tanks and associated infrastructure (pipeline and works to an existing jetty) would not have an adverse impact upon the local environment of the Milford Haven area.

Key concerns were addressed to safeguard the Pembrokeshire Marine Special Area of Conservation by reducing the visual impact of the facility, minimising loss of terrestrial habitat. In all cases, a minimum impact philosophy was adopted and the final landscaping and water features provide environmental gain in terms of biodiversity and nature conservation.

The required Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Licence was only issued once the licensing authority was convinced that the best technology available is being used to operate and manage the terminal. This eliminates or minimises any ensuing emissions and prevents them from causing possible damage to the environment. All facilities have multiple containment systems, proven operational procedures and many other processes to ensure all activities are carried out efficiently, without an impact on the environment. Good site management and strict safety regulations during the construction phase ensured there was no  long-term disturbance of the marine ecology near to the site.

Dragon LNG does not contribute to any significant changes in local air quality. A detailed assessment of the health and safety issues associated with operating the facility indicates that the level of risk presented by the Dragon LNG Terminal is within the levels that the HSE considers tolerable. Generally speaking, natural gas contains a few impurities, such as sulphur for instance, so even the minimal emmissions from Dragon LNG are considered to be clean.

As further improvement, Dragon LNG has also committed to achieve a certified Environmental Management System (EMS). This will ensure all our operational activities that impact the environment are risk assessed. Based on the environmental risk assessment, actions are put in place to reduce and mitigate environmental impact. With a certified EMS, Dragon LNG will ensure the system will be consistently and effectively implimented.
