BG SPIRIT

BG SPIRIT won the Global Challenge 2004/2005 yacht race in July 2005. Considered to be the world’s toughest yacht race, the identical fleet of 12 steel hulled 72-footers raced 30,000 miles around the world in the ‘wrong’ direction - against the prevailing winds and currents. Crewed by amateurs, it’s a race about ordinary people doing extraordinary things with just the spirit, determination, teamwork and commitment making the difference between winning and losing.

Starting in Portsmouth in October 2004, the race made seven ports of call and crossed the Southern Ocean twice. During the 10 month race, BG SPIRIT had three leg-winning firsts, two other podium places, one 24 Hour Run Trophy and had the greatest margin of victory ever recorded in one leg throughout the history of the race.
